The High Achiever’s Achilles Heel: Blind Ambition

By Kerry Kalendra, Founder, MTA Mortgage Brokers
A person climbs a ladder that stands above a body of water.

In our relentless pursuit of achievement, we often find ourselves adrift, clinging to the wreckage of ambition. The modern world, with its constant connectivity and ever-escalating expectations, can leave us feeling depleted, disillusioned, and desperately in need of a reset. But how do we navigate this landscape of disappointment and burnout? How do we rediscover meaning and purpose when the very foundations of our striving seem to crumble beneath our feet?

Kerry Kalendra, founder of MTA Mortgage Brokers, in Melbourne, Australia offers a compelling roadmap in his master class, a testament to the power of self-awareness and the possibility of profound personal transformation. Kalendra’s journey is a familiar one. He found himself caught in the undertow of limiting beliefs, operating on autopilot, unconsciously reinforcing negative patterns. “Many people,” he observes, “operate on autopilot, unconsciously reinforcing negative patterns.” His story reminds us that the first step towards change is recognizing the chains that bind us – the ingrained assumptions and self-defeating narratives that dictate our choices.

The Courage to Question

Kalendra’s breakthrough came when he dared to question one of his most deeply held beliefs: that waking up early was unproductive. This seemingly small shift unlocked a cascade of positive changes, revealing the transformative power of challenging our own internal status quo. As Carl Jung wisely noted, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” Kalendra’s experience underscores this truth. By bringing his limiting beliefs into the light, he was able to rewrite his own narrative and reclaim agency over his life.

The path to renewal, however, is not always easy. It requires a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths, to embrace vulnerability, and to step outside the well-worn grooves of our comfort zones. As Brené Brown, the renowned researcher on vulnerability, reminds us, “Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.” Kalendra’s advocacy for early rising and abstaining from alcohol, while perhaps not for everyone, reflects this courage. He dared to experiment with new ways of being, embracing practices that fostered clarity, focus, and a deeper sense of purpose.

The Ripple Effect

But personal transformation is not merely an individual pursuit. Kalendra emphasizes the “ripple effect” of our actions, reminding us that our own growth can inspire and uplift those around us. By becoming the best version of ourselves, we create a virtuous cycle of positive change, contributing to a more compassionate and flourishing world. As the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks wrote, “The greatest single antidote to despair is gratitude.” Kalendra’s emphasis on gratitude and appreciation reinforces this idea, suggesting that by focusing on the good in our lives, we can cultivate a sense of resilience and hope, even in the face of adversity.

Now, Kalendra has vowed to help other sales leaders in Australia and in the US who suffer from similar setbacks. His message – practical, down-to-earth, and genuinely transformative – is resonating deeply, and he’s begun accepting speaking engagements. He is slated to deliver a keynote address in the US this October and will be available to speak to sales audiences stateside.

On April 10th, Kerry will deliver a 20-min keynote at the Sales Transformation Summit. To hear him speak, sign up here.

In the end, Kalendra’s message is one of empowerment. He reminds us that we have the power to choose our thoughts, beliefs, and actions, regardless of our past experiences or current circumstances. By embracing a growth mindset, setting meaningful goals, and cultivating a supportive community, we can navigate the challenges of modern life with greater resilience, purpose, and joy. The journey may be difficult, but the rewards – a life of meaning, connection, and lasting impact – are well worth the effort.
